Being missional can mean many things so it is probably a good idea to clarify a few things from the outset.

In my current context and praxis being misisonal means that as a church we are deliberately engaging our community through acts of service and offering programmes that meet community needs.  Our worship gatherings are not the ultimate focus of what we do, but a chance to come together as a community of believers and those who are on a journey with us and support each other in joy and in sorrow.

Critical to our misisonal adventure is the development of missional communities that will engage with their specific communities in ways that are unique and flexible. Larger than small groups but smaller than a congregation these communities will hopefully become the critical interface of  the churched and unchurched.

This may seem like a strange first up post but today I was eating a cupcake and it made me think…..  about our culture and society because right now it seems that cupcakes are one of the coolest food items around.  I was thinking that cupcakes are a really good picture of our culture.

You see cupcakes are all about being an individual. You get the cupcake you want and one of the big bonuses is that you don’t have to share it. Unlike a cake which is meant to be eaten with others cupcakes are all about the individual!

This pervasive individualism is nothing new and has been commented on by all and sundry and the ironic thing is that everybody (each individual that is) has an opinion on its merits or dangers! But I just thought that the humble cupcake was a great picture of how our culture has individualised even the simple joy of  having morning tea.
